Michel Couvreur 15 Years XV “2003 X 2018”, Single cask whisky, France, 50cl, 45%

Amber color, fine, delicate, very fine and persistent complexity (783 bottles only). The story: in 2003, the vintage “Clearach” was born. Since then, some barrels have been isolated and reveal themselves with finesse. After the first batch of 2003 X 2013, the new casks are equally astonishing.

The house Michel Couvreur, now managed by his son-in-law, is an independent Belgian bottler of Scottish whiskey whose aging cellars are located in Bouze-lès-Beaune, in Burgundy. It presents XV years old, a single cask whiskey, distilled on January 13, 2003, aged 15 years in barrels Oloroso.

These limited release series is a product of art in terms of taste and presentation. Special artworks by renowned artists are used to adorn each bottle as an expression of its unique taste and character. The labels are of Japanese art individually selected by Eric for each bottling.

The First Editions range of single barrel expressions is always released at natural cask strength, and of course without colouring or chill filtration.

As the name may suggest, each cask is carefully selected to evoke the qualities of a rare literary volume – those of character and collectability. Colour-coding on the labels denotes the particular regions the whiskies themselves are from and each bottle is individually numbered and presented in a gift tube. A “First Editions” bottling without doubt makes a valuable addition to anyone’s whisky library.

38 year old single grain from Girvan, matured in a single refill hogshead cask. It was distilled in 1979.

Nose: Resinous pine, treacle tart, sponge cake and lime peel.

Palate: Creamy vanilla and peach arrive first, followed shortly by peppercorn and cinnamon.

Finish: Mature oak, strawberry boiled sweets, mint.

Colour: Faded Gold

Nose: The nose opens with ripe watermelon, baked plantain, green peppers and a floral freshness. Green twigs, balsa wood and pencil shavings can also be detected alongside a malty, cereal rich note.

Palate:  Juicy watermelon, papaya, pear and kiwi burst onto the palate. Granola and flapjack provide some malty depth whilst sweet toffee and butter fudge can also be detected. The whisky is honey sweet with a oily body.

Finish: A light lingering tropical sweetness.

Colour – Rusty copper.

Nose – Over 31 years of Sherry Butt maturation has developed the complex and deep flavours of cherry, currants and ginger cake. Earthy and antique aromas develop over several minutes in the glass like a patchouli and sandalwood oil.

Palate – There are layers of complex flavours that shift, develop and evolve with every new taste. Orange oil, stewed red berry fruits, sweetened rye bread, caraway, heather and rich wood influences. Give this whisky plenty of time!

Finish – The finish is long and lingering with dark fruits and cigar like tannin.

Colour: Light Gold

Nose: A punchy nose of zesty orange rind, honeysuckle, dried peaches and raspberry intermingles with milder notes of vanilla cream and coconut milk.

Palate: Toasted almonds, marzipan and desiccated coconut as well as vanilla, banana and oats evoke a gourmet porridge. After a few seconds ginger, white pepper and saffron deliver a spicy mid palate.

Finish: flinty and mineralic with a drying finish adds a salty twist to this Islay porridge.

Long the privileged secret of Master Blenders and canny warehousemen throughout the whisky industry, well-aged Single Grain Scotch Whiskies have in recent years been growing in appreciation and popularity amongst connoisseurs. With a history of producing luxury blended whiskies dating back many years, the Directors of Hunter Laing & Co. understand and appreciate grain whiskies and are pleased to be guarding excellent stockholdings of certain such spirits between 25 and 50 years of age. Hunter Laing’s Sovereign range of single cask single grain whiskies are bottled at cask strength and without chill filtration or artificial colouring. Rich, extra-fruity single-grain whisky from the now-closed Port Dundas distillery. It was bottled by Hunter Laing after maturing for 27 years, developing sweet notes of toffee popcorn, tropical fruit, toasty oak and a sprinkling of black pepper
